1. Oil content.
Adding a small amount of oil (0.5% ~ 1%) is conducive to reducing the wear of the pellet mill parts, and making the pellets easily pass through the die holes, thus increasing the pellet output. However, when the oil content exceeds 2%, the pellets extruded will become loose and difficult to shape.

2. Crude fiber.
Appropriate crude fiber content (3% ~ 5%) is conducive to the bonding of pellets, reducing the pulverization rate of pellets and increasing its output. However, if the crude fiber content exceeds 10%, the pellets’ hardness and shaping rate will be greatly affected due to poor adhesion, and the machine wear will be increased, thereby reducing the pellet output.

3. Water content.
If the water content of the material is too high, pelleting temperature raise will be reduced, thus affecting the yield and quality of the pellets, and resulting to die hole blocking. Generally, the water content of the material should be kept below 13% before preparing.

4. Protein.
The high protein content of the material will contribute to its plasticity and viscosity after heating, thus increasing pellet output. But when non-protein nitrogen (such as urea, etc.) is high, the pellet output decreases.

5. Starch.
Cereals often have high starch content and are easy to shape under high temperature and high moisture, so the yield is high. In this case, the water content should be between 16% and 18%, and the temperature should be above 80℃. Otherwise, the degree of starch gelatinization is poor, brittle pellets occur, and even cannot be shaped. If the grain has been gelatinized before preparing (such as dry corn), the pellet output will decrease.

6. Heat sensitive feed.
Lactose, and whey powder, etc. would increase in their viscosity after heating, thus increasing pellet yield. However, if the temperature exceeds 60°C, gelatinization may occur, and block the die holes, thus affecting the pellet yield.

7. Mineral substance.
Inorganic substance barely has any adhesive force, which will affect pellet output. So, when the inorganic substance content is high, a certain amount of binder usually should be added to the feed material to improve shaping performance and increase pellet output.

The above are the common substances that will affect the pellet output. These substances are ubiquitous in feeds, wood chips and other materials, so only by controlling them can we ensure the quality of pellet products.
